Alldrick Digital CD-ROM Geological Survey of Canada Open File 5581 About the CD-ROM This CD-ROM contains data for the geology of NTS mapsheets 103P/05, 103P/06, 103P/10, and 103P/15. Paper versions of these maps were published in 2006 as Open Files 5304, 5301, 5303, and 5302 respectively. The published maps are included in PDF format, as well as the legends only. The symbols legend is also provided in PDF format for each map, if the user wishes to view these while viewing the ArcReader files. The Table of Contents in ArcReader does not provide sufficient format to view the arc symbols properly. The digital geology and base data for each map are included as ArcInfo coverages, Arc Export files (.e00) and shapefiles. Digital maps are provided in ArcReader 9.2 format (.pmf) and ArcGIS 8.3 and 9.0 format (.mxd). The symbology for the arcs and points are similar to those found on the published paper maps. Special fonts are necessary for viewing the digital maps. These fonts are provided on this CD and are automatically copied to the user’s Windows\Fonts directory. Executable files are provided for Adobe® Reader for viewing .pdf files and for ESRI ArcReader® for viewing the digital data sets. Geological Survey of Canada Open Files are products that have not gone through the GSC formal publication process. System Requirements Microsoft® Windows® 2000 or later; Microsoft®Word2000; Microsoft® Internet Explorer 6.0 or later; Netscape 7.0 or later; Adobe® PDF Reader™ (version 8 provided); ESRI® ArcReader™ 9.2 (provided) or ArcGIS™ 9.* or ArcGIS™ 8.3 The INTRO Panel This is an Autoplay CD. Inserting the CD into your CD-ROM drive will automatically launch an introduction panel from which you can choose options. On some systems the autoplay functionality will not work. The basedata and geology data have been loaded and symbolized for viewing. The content of these files cannot be edited. The layers of data may be turned on/off by checking/unchecking the box beside the layer listed at the left side of the window. A list of features within each layer can be viewed/removed by clicking on the + and - sign beside the layer title. If the user wishes to transfer the .pmf file to their own computer, you must copy both the /data and /pmf directories. The cross-sections are hot linked to the .pdf file showing the cross-section figure. The geology units are hot linked to the .pdf file of the legend. By clicking the lightning bolt button in ArcReader, the geology units and the cross-section (if applicable) are highlighted in blue. Click on the cross-section line or click within a geology unit to view a pop-up window showing the .pdf file. For a complete description of the geology units, the user is advised to view the database for the layer by using the "i" (Information) button on ArcReader and then clicking on a geology unit. Or the user can open the .pdf for the legend while viewing the ArcReader file. For an explanation of the attribute fields in the data files, open the file fields.htm or fields.doc. GIS data All data are available for viewing or downloading. The digital data is provided in Universal Transverse Mercator projection, UTM Zone 9 NAD27. The GIS_data directory contains subdirectories for each mapsheet. Each mapsheet directory contains subdirectories for coverages, .e00, and shape file formats. The base data (rivers, lakes, roads, railways, and international boundary) are 1:50 000 NTS data compiled by Geomatics Canada and modified by the Geological Survey of Canada. These data have been converted from UTM Zone 9 NAD83 projection to UTM Zone 9 NAD27 projection. Metadata files for the base data are also available meta directory. Files named bas* contain contours, roads, railways, international boundaries, and park boundaries; files named hyd* contain rivers, lakes, and glaciers. The geology data is also available in coverage, .e00, and shape file format. These data include geology polygons and contact arcs (files named geo*), form lines (files named for*), and structural (folds and faults) arcs (files named lin*). Structural features measured at field stations (files named pnt*), fossil locations (files name fos*), and MINFILE locations (file named min*) are provided, if applicable, for each of the maps. Information regarding the sources for the geological information contained on this Open File product can be found in the Descriptive Notes on each map .pdf file. The user may copy the data to their own computer and use it in their own GIS program. PDF files The original Open File maps and legends are viewable in .pdf format. Also, the cross-sections and the MINFILE information, if applicable, are available in .pdf format.
