GlobalDBSystem: Mineral Deposit Database Management Utilities for use with MS-Access(tm). R. M. Laramée, Geological Survey of Canada Foreword by L. B. Chorlton and W. D. Sinclair, Geological Survey of Canada This set of software utilities was developed to manage mineral deposit databases compiled for the World Minerals Geoscience Database Project (WMGDP), 1998-04-01 to 2004-03-31 (URL: http://gsc.nrcan.gc.ca/wmgdb/ on 2005-01-17). The data model was designed to capture and house the most readily available and significant elements of geological information about mineral deposits on a global scale. The utilities, the underlying data model, and the terminology were iteratively improved during the course of the project based on the information and ergonomic feedback of expert economic geologists who compiled the databases, and other users extracting data from the databases. The model and utilities have been adopted by a number of the large companies sponsoring the project, by the MAP:GAC Multinational Andean Project: Geoscience for Andean Communities, and by a number of independent consultants. Their feedback has encouraged us to make the utilities more widely available. They enable users to conveniently view, query and extract data from WMGDP mineral deposit databases, and should be used with the digital database that accompanies this report. The utilities are not embedded within a database management system software package or within a database, but must be connected to one according to instructions contained in the HTML documentation, and installed under the name LocalWebSite. They have been used with MS-Access(tm)95/97/2000 databases, on Windows(tm) 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP platforms. MS-Access(tm) must be installed on your computer, as well as a database structured according to the WMGDP database specifications. An empty WMGDP database, with tables set up according to the WMGDP mineral deposit database model but containing no data, is copied to your computer when you run the installation package provided; you should customize your own Lookup tables. Please read the small text read1st.txt and readme.txt files that accompany the installation before installing. Once the software, empty database, and documentation have been installed through the Install Shield, please follow the HTML documentation through the alias configuration steps (Defining database aliases). There are many important hints to help you avoid known potential problems. The two main utilities that will be installed on your computer with be: GShell319ADO: This utility can connect to any of the WMGDP databases for which you have defined aliases. You enable it to recognize the correct databases by prefixing the phrase Global to the alias name as instructed. It is used to either browse (look without modifying) or to enter, update or delete data. GQuery319ADO: This utility can connect to any of the WMGDP databases for which that you have defined aliases. It is used to filter data i.e., narrow down the deposit selection based on conditions you build in the Select window. You will be able to prepare and save a template for a user-defined spreadsheet. When positioned on a selection for which you would like to export data in easily digested formats, you can export data in two forms: (1) as a tab-delimited text file suitable for importing into spreadsheet, database, or GIS software; and (2) as an indexed folder of HTML pages, one for each deposit in the selection. The HTML pages report full data contents for each deposit. A third utility, Documenter, can be used by a compiler to specify exactly how each table and field is being used, and a fourth utility GQ_ADO_XtraTables will create or recreate summary tables in the database for use by GQuery319ADO. There may be improvements to the database structure and software in the future, as well as updated versions of World Minerals Databases. Please note that these utilities are specifically designed only for the databases with which they are distributed. Primary Contact: Robert M.
