AQUIFER DELINEATION, FRASER LOWLAND AND DELTA, BRITISH COLUMBIA: MAPPING, GEOPHYSICS AND GROUNDWATER MODELLING Introduction ------------ The hydrogeology CD comprises two main directories: acrobat, which contains Adobe Acrobat Readers, and hydrogeo, which contains the products of the Fraser Lowland Hydrogeology Project. Final versions are available on hard copy in GSC Bulletin 552. If you do not already have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer you must install it from the CD, as described below, using the correct version for your operating system. Once you have installed the Acrobat Reader you can use it to view files contained in the hydrogeo directory starting with the file homepage.pdf. Installing the Acrobat Reader for Windows 3.1, Windows95/98/NT --------------------------------------------------------- Find the CD directory that corresponds to your operating system, e.g. if you use Windows95, go to D:\acrobat\win95. Click on the executable file in that directory to launch the installation program. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen, and accept default values wherever possible. Note: if possible it is best to download the latest version of Acrobat Reader from http://www.adobe.com Installing the Acrobat Reader for DOS ------------------------------------- Go to the D:\acrobat\dos directory and type the command ACRODOS at the DOS prompt. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen, and accept default values wherever possible. Installing the Acrobat Reader for UNIX -------------------------------------- If you have not mounted the CD-ROM drive on your computer you must do so before starting the installation. To mount the CD-ROM follow these steps: 1) put the CD in the CD-ROM drive and log in as a root user. 2) if there is no /cdrom directory create one by entering the command: mkdir /cdrom 3) then enter the command: mount -t cdfs -r -o noversion /dev/rz1c /cdrom where /dev/rz1c is the block special file that points to your CD-ROM drive. NOTE: naming conventions for special files (e.g. /dev/rz1c) vary from system to system. Consult your system documentation to find the name of the special file that points to your CD-ROM drive. When the CD-ROM is mounted you will have access to the directory /cdrom/acrobat/unix. This directory contains subdirectories corresponding to various flavours of Unix (e.g. Solaris, Irix etc.). Each of these contains a tar file containing the Acrobat Reader installation scripts. Copy the correct file for your system to your home directory by following these steps: 1) Change to any convenient directory such as your home directory. 2) Copy the tar file that corresponds to your flavour of UNIX from the CD, e.g. if you use Solaris, type: cp /cdrom/acrobat/unix/solaris/solaris3.tar . 3) Then untar the file with the command: tar xvf solaris3.tar (Substitute the name of the tar file for your system if you don't use Solaris). 4) Several files will be extracted including a plain text help file and an executable called INSTALL. Read the help file and then start the installation by typing INSTALL. Follow the instructions on the screen and accept default values wherever possible. Using Acrobat - All Systems --------------------------- Once you have started the Acrobat Reader you can use it to view all of the documents on the CD-ROM. All documents are stored under the directory :\hydrogeo, where :\ is your cd-rom drive, (/cdrom/hydrogeo where /cdrom is your cd-rom mount point for UNIX users). Start by using the File pulldown menu to open the file called homepage.pdf. This is the starting point for navigating through the results of the Fraser Lowland Hydrogeology Project. From this page you can choose to view papers, maps or data via links that will open subsequent documents. As you move the cursor around the screen you can locate links by watching the open hand change to a pointing finger. Click on a link to go to the linked document. Use the tools at the top of the Acrobat Reader window to move, magnify, backtrack, search for text, etc. Note to Windows95/98/NT users: Once the Acrobat Reader is installed on your system, inserting the CD in the CD-ROM drive will automatically start the Reader and open the homepage.pdf document. To download the most recent version of Acrobat Reader go to http://www.adobe.com Techinical Assistance --------------------- If you have questions regarding the installation or viewing of the Fraser Lowland Hydrogeology Project CD please contact the Geological Survey of Canada, Vancouver office at 604-666-0529.
