Although the data were prepared with ArcInfo, files can also be imported by other types of Geographic Information System (GIS) software such as ArcView, MapInfo and AutoCAD Map. In addition, the CDs contain SurView, a program for Microsoft Windows that allows one to display, plot and query the data sets without the need for a GIS. One CD (Disc 1) contains data in Albers Equal Area projection. On the other CD (Disc 2) data is presented in the Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system. The Intro Panel --------------- These are Autoplay CDs for Microsoft Windows (except Windows 3.1). Inserting the CD into your CD-ROM drive will automatically launch Intro.exe, a panel of buttons from which you can open the documentation, and start SurView to view maps. If the Intro application doesn't start up (as on Windows 3.x), you can start it manually by clicking on intro.exe in the folders \yg_alb02 (for Disc 1) or \yg_utm02 (for Disc 2). Directory Structure ------------------- The CD-ROMs contain four main subdirectories (in \yg_alb02): \apps - SurView.exe and associated files \data - data sets in various formats \doc - documentation in HTML format \intro - files used by the Intro Panel Documentation ------------- All documentation is provided in HTML format which can be viewed in any web browser or modern word processor. Begin by clicking on the [Documentation] button on the Intro panel, or by double-clicking on \doc\html\welcome.htm. All documents are interlinked via a sidebar menu. SurView ------- A limited version of SurView (a viewing application developed by the Geological Survey of Canada to display geophysical, geological, and geochemical data) is provided on the CD-ROMs in the \apps directory. SurView can display, print and query the geology data in the \data\shp and \data\bil subdirectories. To start SurView from the Intro panel click the [View Data] button. You can also start SurView by double-clicking on surview.exe in the \apps folder. After file associations have been set you can start SurView by clicking on any .asx, .fdl file in the \data\shp subdirectories, or any .grx file in the \data\bil subdirectory. A SurView tutorial is provided with the CDs via the sidebar menu of the documentation (or double click on \apps\st\st.htm). ArcInfo Library ---------------- An ArcInfo library is provided as a self-extracting archive (arclib.exe) for Microsoft Windows operating systems, and as a compressed tar file for UNIX users (arclib.tar.gz). These files are in the yg_alb02\data\arclib folder (Disc 1). Read \doc\html\arclib.htm for instructions on restoring the library to your copy of ArcInfo. The library is accessible to ArcView as well. Read \doc\html\avlib.htm for instructions on configuring the library for ArcView. Other GIS --------- Arc Interchange (E00) files in \data\e00 directories, and shapefiles in the \data\shp directories can be imported into several other GIS applications that import this format, including ArcView and MapInfo.
