About the CD-ROM

Open files are preliminary products and have not gone through 
the GSC formal publication process.

This CD-ROM contains several sets of digital data files.

ArcExplorer Installation
-------------------------
Navigate to the install program, ae2setup.exe, in the "Apps" 
directory of this CD-ROM.Double-click the ae2setup.exe file 
and follow the on-screen instructions.


Directory Structure
-------------------
The CD-ROM is divided into the following directories:

\Apps		- ArcExplorer software can be installed from 
		  this location
		- A free data viewer, ArcExplorer, is provided 
		  in this directory
		- See http://www.esri.com/ for more details
		- Double click on the *.EXE file and follow the
		  installation instructions
\Data		- Data in a variety of formats (see below)
   \E00  	- File format
	\Map#  	- Open file map
	\Sgeol 	- Geological data sets
   \Shp		- File format
	\Map#  	- Open file map
	\Sgeol 	- Geological data sets
\Doc		- Text files (.doc) of author's notes
		- Pdf files (.pdf) of author's notes
\Meta		- Metadata for the open file maps




Directory Names

Standardized "file type" directory names:
	\E00	E00 files
	\SHP	SHP files
Example "data type" directory names:
	\SGEOL	Surficial geology

Example "data type" file names:
	geo	- All geological unit polygons segmented with 
		  shorelines
	gep	- Overlay of geological polygons usually displayed
		  by a pattern
	lin	- All geological linear features
	ntl	- Neatline of map
	pnt	- All geological point features

Data Files
----------
All data are provided in a variety of formats

Vector:
       E00	- Arc/Info ASCII interchange format files 
		  allow Arc/Info coverages to be read by 
		  Arc/Info on all platforms
		- This format is also supported by many other 
		  GIS packages
       Shape	- DBF database format is a standard format for 
		  reading data into GIS software

Each data subdirectory contains regular format files.  The 
regular files can be accessed directly from the CD-ROM.
