METADATA Record Number Title of the publication Hydrocarbon potential of the Paleozoic succession of southwestern Ontario: Preliminary conceptual synthesis of background data Originator(s) Hamblin, A.P. Category of the Publication Open File Publication Format CDROM Abstract The hydrocarbon potential of the lower Paleozoic succession of southwestern Ontario was first realized in 1858 with the first commercial oil well in North America. Development continues today, at a modest level, for oil and gas in a wide variety of carbonate and clastic plays of many different ages and styles. Most discoveries and production in these understudied rocks are from step-outs to known fields, and there are few wildcats, little testing of new concepts and little modern stratigraphic analysis. Most zones still have excellent potential for further discoveries in this shallow, low-risk setting. The location in the heart of major markets is a significant positive factor. New geological study of structural controls, stratigraphic architecture and correlation, lateral predictability of reservoir geometry, trap mechanism for basin-centred gas plays, and generation of new play concepts would likely result in major increases in exploration success and economic impact.
