  Description:
    Abstract:
      The surficial materials in the southeast portion of the Icebound Lakes map area
      relate to glaciation and are dominated by deglacial landforms and deposits.
      The upland areas are predominantly exposed bedrock and till, but many lateral
      meltwater channels and glaciofluvial deposits are also present. The valleys
      are dominated by deglacial features, such as meltwater channels and ice dammed
      lake deposits. The Ravn River valley contained a large glacial lake that
      formed along a retreating paleo-Barnes Ice Cap margin. Five phases of this
      lake can be reconstructed from geomorphic features such as shorelines and
      deltas. Some small glaciers still exist in the map area; the extent of their
      recent retreat is evident from their margins mapped from aerial photographs
      (ca. 1958) and Landsat imagery (ca. 2000).
