Online_Linkage: Description: Abstract: The Moody Creek map area (NTS 84M/2) is the center of oil and gas operations around Zama City. The map area straddles the south to north transition from the Fort Nelson Lowland, from 350 to 450 m asl, to the slopes of Bootis Upland, up to 650 m asl. Permafrost is discontinuous in the map area, and typically underlies organic bog sediments, where it is especially vulnerable to melting due to disturbance, such as road and drill pad construction. The area is extensively mantled by fine grained glacial deposits. Lowlands in the south portion of the map area are quite flat and underlain by thick glacial sediments. Till is the most common surficial material and is generally clay rich with clast concentration of less than 5%. Till occurs as a veneer or a blanket, with the latter being further subdivided based on surface expression: ridged and hummocky. Uplands in the northern portion of the map area reflect bedrock topography and are draped by a blanket of till between 1 and 10 metres thick. In flat lowland areas, till is at least 8 metres thick, and likely much thicker. Glaciolacustrine sediments are also clay rich, and form a veneer 1 to 4 metres thick above till in low-lying areas in the south. Glaciofluvial sediments are rare with existing gravel supplies only found in two pits exploiting subtill gravels likely deposited in subglacial conduits. As a result, aggregate is in short supply and most roads are constructed with existing surficial material. Organic sediments include fibric bog material and water saturated mesic fen material that is commonly mixed with fine grained sediments. Large fens occupy the southeast portion of the map area and overlie glaciolacustrine sediments. Low energy rivers in the area result in alluvial sediments, mainly organic silt and clay. The Quaternary stratigraphy of the Moody Creek map area is part of the M.Sc. thesis project of the first author. Stratigraphy in the map area is mostly exposed in borrowed pits dug by the oil and gas industry. These pits have an ephemeral life filling up rapidly with water if they are located below water table or are graded by excavators greatly limiting stratigraphic studies. Initial stratigraphic investigations provide evidence of a single Laurentide glaciation, with both advance and retreat phase proglacial lakes forming as ice blocked eastward drainage. Till in the southern lowlands is capped by retreat phase glaciolacustrine silt and clay. A thin veneer of diamicton overlying contorted glaciolacustrine sediments provides stratigraphic evidence for a surge into a proglacial lake or the grounding of floating ice. The flat topography of the area and lack of deeply incised rivers will require the use of subsurface data in future stratigraphic studies. Purpose: Supplemental_Information: Data set is in English.
