Online_Linkage: Description: Abstract: Regional-scale bedrock geological mapping was conducted on northeastern Ellesmere Island from 1998 to 2000 by the Geological Survey of Canada and the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) of Hannover, Germany. Results are here compiled on five map sheets and four structural cross-sections at 1:125,000 scale: NTS 39G (Sawyer Bay); 39H and 29G (Dobbin Bay); 120B (Kennedy Channel); 120C and D south half (Lady Franklin Bay) and; 340A east half (Agassiz Ice Cap). Sedimentary rocks of mostly Phanerozoic age are exposed above Paleoproterozoic crystalline basement from Bache Peninsula and the head of Canon Fiord in the southwest, to the north end of Judge Daly Promontory in the northeast, and from Kane Basin and Kennedy Channel in the southeast, to Agassiz Ice Cap and Lady Franklin Bay in the northwest. The geology of this area sheds new light on the structure and depositional history of the Arctic Platform, central Ellesmere Fold Belt, Hazen Fold Belt, and Eurekan Orogeny. Relevant detail is provided concerning the former plate-tectonic relationship between Greenland and Arctic North America. Commodities of potential economic interest include zinc, lead and copper sulphides, and sulphosalts additionally containing antimony, arsenic, silver and gold.
