Description :
Winter roads include sections that traverse ice cover and land. Ice sections are commonly referred to as ice roads and land sections as portages. The Tibbitt-to-Contwoyto winter road crosses about 350 km of lake ice and 50 km of portages. Nominally the speed limit on portages, for both loaded and empty trucks, is 30 km h-1. In accordance with environmental regulations, portages must be covered by minimally 10 cm of snow/ice in order to limit disturbance of the soil by traffic. For that reason, portages are regularly flooded during the operating season.
