The Newmarket Till is a regional aquitard in southern Ontario that overlies the Illinoian to Middle Wisconsinan Lower Sediment and is overlain by the Oak Ridges Moraine. Geological investigations have mapped the distribution of the till and it is understood that erosional channels, subsequently infilled with fluvial material, breach the till and may create enhanced hydraulic connection between overlying and underlying aquifers. However, little is known about the protective capability of the Newmarket Till where it is intact. This knowledge gap is being addressed by investigations of the rates and mechanisms for transport of natural and anthropogenic tracers in the porewater of the till. The research program was initiated in October 2017 with the coring of a new borehole at Sideline 4 near the intersection of highways 407 and 412, north of Ajax, Ontario. Vertical concentration profiles are generated for natural tracers by subsampling drill cores and then extracting porewater to measure the chemical (Cl, Br, F, NO3) and isotopic composition (delta-18O, delta-2H, delta-13C, 3H, 3He/4He). By coupling the tracer concentration profiles with a one-dimensional numerical transport model, we will calculate the rates of diffusive and advective transport across the aquitard.
