The 27 October M 7.7 earthquake off the coast of Haida Gwaii is Canada's second largest instrumentally recorded earthquake, and the first with modern digital data. The epicentre was about 70 km from the nearest community Queen Charlotte City. It was felt as far away as Whitehorse, Edmonton, northern Washington State, and Montana (a distance of 1500 km). This article provides an introduction to a series of companion articles that summarise the variety of monitoring and research activities underway, and provides some preliminary results.
