The physical and chemical characteristics of indicator minerals allow them to be readily recovered from exploration sample media (e.g. stream, alluvial, glacial or eolian sediments or soils) and make them sufficiently abundant. These characteristics include visual distinctiveness, moderate to high density, silt or sand-size, and ability to survive weathering and/or clastic transport. Indicator minerals are recovered from surficial media using various combinations of sizing, gravity and magnetic separation techniques designed to take advantage of these traits. This paper describes some of the more commonly used sample processing and picking procedures used at commercial laboratories to recover indicator minerals in support of mineral exploration.
