During magnetic storms the variations of the geomagnetic field induce significant 'telluric currents' in steel oil and gas pipelines. These currents change the pipe-to-soil potential thereby modifying the electrochemical conditions at the pipe surface, increasing the likelihood of corrosion. The amplitudes of the telluric currents observed in a pipeline depend on three factors: (1) the level of geomagnetic activity, (2) conductivity of the underlying Earth and (3) pipeline electromagnetic properties and geometric parameters. These factors have been incorporated into mathematical models that can be used to estimate the pipe-to-soil variations due to the telluric activity. The complete simulation, based on the geomagnetic data from Canadian observatories, conductivity structures for the different regions of Canada and the pipeline model is used to provide an on-line space weather service for pipeline operations. This allows the user to evaluate the pipe-to-soil potential fluctuations at particular locations for a user-defined pipeline and correct results of pipeline potential surveys. The modelling capability can also be used for hazard assessments and as a design tool for new pipelines. A recent study for the auroral region included a statistical evaluation of the geomagnetic activity for the past 30 years, specification of zones with different earth conductivities, which combined lead to existence of identifiable zones of telluric activity. This is used as input to models of planned pipelines to assess the expected impact of space weather.
