Power lines and pipelines are exposed to low frequency electromagnetic fields produced by natural (geomagnetic disturbances) sources. The resulting induced currents can disrupt system operations and cause power blackout or excessive pipeline corrosion. The paper presents examples of the natural electromagnetic disturbances that produce negative effects on conducting networks. Modelling of the geomagnetic induction provides the essential explanation and leads to successful mitigation of these problems.
