Résumé(disponible en anglais seulement)
Seismologists and engineers in the Canadian Seismic Research Network (CSRN) are studying how seismic waves cause damage in populated areas. With help from ESRI¿s Geostatistical Analyst, a map of Ottawa was published in 2009 by CSRN and the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) depicting the variation of expected ground shaking across Ottawa based on the type of materials found in the near surface. This map forms a digital layer, which can be used to assess the structural vulnerability of buildings and other civil engineering infrastructure using ArcGIS-based CanRISK software, developed at the University of Ottawa. Aspects of the June 23rd, 2010 M5.0 earthquake will also be discussed in relation to seismic risk for the city of Ottawa.
