This map shows the distribution of surficial materials in Nunavut. The surficial materials map is derived from Fulton's (1995) Surficial Materials Map of Canada with some cartographic modifications and minor geologic modifications. The original map was compiled from existing maps where present and the interpretation of surficial materials by experts where no mapping existed. Predominant materials in Nunavut are glaciomarine sediments (Figure 1), glaciofluvial sediments (Figure 2), till (Figure 3) and exposed bedrock (Figure 4).

The inset maps, from Dyke et al. (2003), show the inferred position of the Laurentide Ice Sheet margin at the Last Glacial Maximum, 8 thousand years ago and 6 thousand years ago. Broadly speaking, these margins are constructed from glacial geomorphologic (Figure 5) and ice flow features (Figure 6). Age control on marginal positions are from radiocarbon ages, mostly of marine molluscs (Figure 7).
