AbstractMeasurements of the geomagnetic components with the proton magnetometer require a coil system for producting a homogeneous bias field in a direction whlchcan bedetermined accurately. The theoretical advantages of various symrnetrical arrangements of coils are reviewed, and the precision of mechanical construction necessary to achieve the theoretical performance is estima ted. It is concluded that where a Helmholtz pair would be too large, the most practical choice is a system of four circula.r coaxial coils of equal diarneter.
