AbstractLacustrine sedimentary sequences represent, in addition to tree rings, another indirect source of information on past hydro-climatic conditions. The laminated sequences of sediments stands as 'varves' when being established to be annual. They are lithogenic or clastic when they originate from the accumulation of terrigenous sediments related to seasonal variations of hydrologic run-off. The ARCHIVES experts has adopted a procedure for prospecting lakes likely to have varved sediment sequences, for sampling, collecting, conserving and processing sediments samples, and for the construction of 'composite' sedimentological series. The measured characteristics of the latter (thickness of the varves) are compared with the hydroclimatic data registers and also with the other reconstructions established by dendrochronology.
