Summary(Plain Language Summary, not published)
This article summarizes a new joint initiative of the federal geological survey organizations of USA, Australia and Canada to improve understanding of the content and distribution of so-called critical metals and minerals in mineral deposits in USA, Australia, Canada, and elsewhere. Critical metals and minerals are essential to the economic and national security of nations, and are needed for emerging and low-carbon technologies such as rechargeable batteries andthin-film solar photovotaics . The initiative (Critical Minerals Mapping Initiative) aims to undertake research that will develop a better understanding of known critical mineral and metal resources, the geological controls on their formation, and identify new sources of supply through mineral potential mapping. First steps are to construct a global digital database andd design an internally consistent mineral deposit classification scheme to classify samples within this database. It is hoped these efforts will serve to improve exploration efficiencies for the commodities, resulting in improved supplies.
