ProgramGEM2: Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals GEM Synthesis
Released2022 12 20; 2023 09 14
Summary(Plain Language Summary, not published)
Sedimentary basins underlie much of northern Canada. These basins host or have potential to host mineral and energy resources, but in many areas, the geological information was insufficient to properly evaluate the geological history or mineral potential. The Geological Survey of Canada's Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals program (2008-2020) made important contributions to understanding Canada's northern sedimentary basins. The 10 papers in this volume provide insights into the age and depositional environments of the sediments that fill these basins, the timing of non-deposition and erosion events, as well as the earth system changes and tectonic forces that led to the geology that is exposed today. Lower Paleozoic basins in the Arctic Islands, Hudson Bay, and Mackenzie Mountains, as well as Mesozoic basins in the Arctic Islands and Yukon are described. Two papers cover broad topics of Mesozoic correlation and exhumation of the Canadian Shield.
