Summary(Plain Language Summary, not published)
This paper presents operational methods and applications for the extraction of map information from high-resolution optical imagery. Four themes of extraction are treated according to their potential and according to the CCMEO's priorities: buildings, hydrographic features, roads and urban vegetation. This literature review aims to prioritize development efforts, identify the main limitations and obtain a current state of the art. For each of the themes, the methods cover the traditional approaches of classification: pixel-by-pixels and object-oriented as well as machine learning approaches, including deep learning. This review also reports on methods requiring multispectral imaging as well as those using only panchromatic or red green blue images. For each theme, the review includes a subsection on extraction methods combining optical imaging with other sensor types such as LiDAR and RADAR.
