Shale hydrocarbon plays are collectively an enormous resource of cleaner fossil energy in Canada. The Devonian-Mississippian Besa River Group of the Liard Basin is a distal, shale-dominated succession with estimated resource of 6,196 bn cubic meters of marketable dry gas in its middle-upper parts correspondent to the Patry-Exshaw stratigraphic interval. This contribution showcases updates about stratigraphic framework of the Besa River and its divisions. Of particular interest is the lower Exshaw interval recording a major spread of anoxic conditions across West Canadian Sedimentary Basin and containing the equivalent of the Hangenberg global anoxic event. The initiation of the Liard Basin and its early history are linked to the interplay of the back-arc extension of the western margin of Laurentia, initiation of motion along Bovie Fault and grabens within the Peace River Embayment, and possible influence of compressional events in the western Arctic Islands and the U.S. Cordillera.
