AbstractThe CANMET process development unit (PDU) for coprocessing up to one half tonne per day (3 bbl/d) of coal and heavy oil or bitumen is described. The PDU, which is located at CANMET's Energy Research Laboratories, consists of a slurry preparation unit, 10-L and 18-L tubular reactors and a 10-L continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), with product fractionation, gas cleaning and recycle. Reactors are equipped with hydrogen quenching systems for stabilizing highly exothermic reactions and with sampling ports to withdraw samples to study properties of the reacting materials. A computer control and data acquisition system is being added to implement process automation. Also, a gamma-ray scanner is installed with the tubular reactors for on-line fluid dynamic studies at operating conditions. The features of the PDU are described along with the results of three commissioning runs.
