Summary(Plain Language Summary, not published)
To characterize the geotechnical properties of sensitive glaciomarine silty clay deposits in the Ottawa Valley, Canada, a series of geophysical surveys were conducted over a buried bedrock basin, 2 km2 and up to 90 m deep, near Gatineau, Quebec. The sub-surface morphology of the bedrock basin was mapped from 193 measurements of Horizontal-to-Vertical spectral ratio (HVSR), and two high resolution shear wave seismic profiles were acquired to delineate 2D sedimentary architecture. Two boreholes were drilled near the centre of the basin to collect samples for geotechnical testing, and to install a 3in PVC casing for geophysical logging. Downhole logs and soil sample tests were used in the interpretation of five electrical resistivity profiles, which identified zones where the geotechnical sensitivity of the soils was locally elevated. Lab tests of the samples also allowed for the study of pore water chemistry and sediment mineralogy. The results of these studies provide input parameters for the modeling of seismically-induced ground motion response within small-scale basins.
