Abstract(unpublished)
The chapter discusses the renewable and non-renewable resources used to generate energy and heat in Canada. The principal non-renewable sources are coal, petroleum and uranium. Coal and petroleum form from organic matter, the latter through complex molecular changes. Once formed, petroleum migrates before being trapped in reservoir rocks. Unconventional sources of petroleum are the oil sands, of which Canada is blessed with huge reserves. Canada is also fortunate to have large reserves of uranium ores. Presently minor sources of energy are solar, wind and geothermal.
