AbstractWhen the Ministry of Public Security of Quebec and the National Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team (HUSAR) needed a credible earthquake disaster scenario for their table exercises, they asked the earthquake and Hazus teams at Natural Resources Canada. The Ministry of Public Safety's Charlevoix Big Shake 2013 Exercise held September 26, 2013 provided response practice for the provincial and municipal agencies based a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. Public Safety Canada Department's national EXERCISE MAGNITUDE 12 held in Vancouver, Canada, October 18-21, 2012 activated the Regional Federal Coordination Centre, Federal Coordination Steering Committee, and deployed HUSAR around a model 7.3 magnitude event. Each of these simulated events used Hazus outputs to show the distribution and magnitude of potential losses of housing, infrastructure and people in the exercise areas, for credible yet extreme potential earthquakes. Hazus loss-estimates for each of these model events was summarized in a mini-atlas of maps that accompanied a short report on the input parameters, methodology and constraints on the interpretation of the outputs. We share the reaction of the organizers and exercise response teams to the Hazus generated information and its incorporation into the exercise inputs and outcomes.
