This new 1:100 000 scale bedrock geology map presents a geological synthesis of Canada's most prolific base metal environment, the Ni-Cu-platinum group elements (PGE) endowed, world-class Sudbury basin with over 1.56 billion tonnes of Ni, Cu, Co, Pt, Pd, Au, Ag ore hosted within one of earths largest impact craters (Lydon, 2007). This geologic map of the supergiant Ni-Cu-PGE Sudbury district, Canada is included in an envelope at the back of the bulletin (Map 1) and is linked with mineral deposit/commodity and geochronology data (Tables 1 and 2) (after Ames et al., 2005). Since 1891, only six Sudbury geology compilation maps were published (Bell, 1891; Collins, 1937; Cooke, 1946; Card, 1969; Dressler, 1984; Ames et al., 2005) (Fig. 1). Some of the mines have operated for over a century whereas new ore deposits, discovered as recently as 2004 are already in production or are in the process of being developed (ie. advanced prospects). This updated geological compilation map integrates the geology, geochronology, impact features and metallogeny across 9 NTS sheets covering about 80 by 60 km, and provides an improved up to date tectonostratigraphic framework for resource exploration and development, education and research.
