AbstractThis paper presents the basic concept of influence coefficients, which are used in XRF analysis to correct for matrix effects. Nowadays, influence coefficients can be classified into two categories depending on their method of calculation: empirical or theoretical. Furthermore, each category can be calculated from binary or multi-element standards. It will be shown how to calculate the four different types of influence coefficients in association with their respective algorithm. This paper will also show the true theoretical and fundamental nature of influence coefficients, supply an accurate and unique mathematical definition of these coefficients and promote their use to correct for matrix effects.
