AbstractThis geological map is derived from regional mapping in the Babiche Mountain (NTS 95C/8) 1:50 000 scale map area, as part of the Geological Survey of Canada's Central Foreland NATMAP project. The Babiche Mountain map area is situated at the southern end of the Franklin Mountains in a foothills physiographic setting. The geology of the area is characterized by sedimentary strata, of Late Devonian to Early Cretaceous age, exposed in a series of asymmetrical box or kink folds whose geometry is controlled largely by the competence of the Carboniferous Mattson Formation. Structure in the area is dominated by the Babiche and Kotaneelee anticlines trending approximately north. En echelon folds at the southern end of the Kotaneelee Range link the Kotaneelee anticline with the Mount Martin anticline to the south. Minor faults with less than a few hundred metres of displacement are also reflected in the map pattern. These faults, with northwesterly strikes, are elements of a second regional trend that creates an interference pattern by interacting with the northerly trending folds. Stratigraphic improvements from previous A-series mapping include the recognition of Permian strata above the Mattson Formation informally known as the Tika formation, the assignment of Triassic strata to the Grayling and Toad formations, and the recognition of the Lower Cretaceous Chinkeh Formation.
