Abstract | This paper evaluates the use of multidate synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery collected by the ERS-1 satellite and multispectral thematic mapper (TM) imagery collected by Landsat satellite for
wetland detection and classification in southern Ontario. The study showed that although single channel ERS-1 images produced poor results, the performances of multidate ERS-1 data were comparable with those of Landsat TM data. The best four-month
combination of ERS-1 images achieved a satisfactory result of 83% overall accuracy in the study area. More detailed analysis showed that the performances of multi-date radar are considerable better than single-date radar data for wetland monitoring.
The cloud free capability of radar data makes it a potential alternative to the optical satellite data. |
