AbstractResults of a study into the capabilities of the ERS SAR to assess and monitor land cover in a tropical rain forest environment are discussed. Single date ERS SAR Precision images prove to make modest bases for classifying non-forest cover types but poor bases for classifying primary, secondary and logged-over forests. Textural statistics from time-averaged ERS-SAR Single Look Complex images make modest bases for classifying tropical primary forest types. ERS SAR Precision images facilitate the monitoring of topical forest cover disturbance in the form of roads, but lack the spatial detail to reliably detect gaps resulting from industrial selective logging.
