AbstractEolian processes pertain to the transport of sediment by wind. This paper reviews eolian activity in Canada, and eolian activity as a geological hazard. The effects of wind erosion can produce long-term impacts or damage to agricultural and recreational lands, and, in some cases, to human health. The hazards include wind erosion of agricultural soils, dust storms, sand-dune activity caused by human disturbance, overgrazing, and/or drought, deflation areas, and alkali dust emissions. Many such hazards result from human activities that initiate or accelerate the rate of eolian processes. Although wind erosion is currently under control in most regions of Canada, projections of future climate warming and increased aridity in some regions suggest that the risk of wind erosion and sand-dune activity could increase in future years.
