AbstractThe research group at the Geological Survey of Fin/and, established for applying glacial geological studies in prospecting, has developed the following research procedure. Exploration pits are dug at ore boulder sites. The till stratigraphy and directions of ice flow are established from these pits, the distance the boulders were transported is assessed, and samples for till lithology and geochemistry are taken. A probability sector for the source rock of the boulders is determined from the directions of ice flow. The study is continued by tracing ore boulders and unique heavy mineral contents ·through the till unit. The procedure has proved very useful in Fin/and, where the surficial deposits are shallow, the average thickness being a mere 6.7 m. During the last nine years, the source rocks for forty-five boulder trains or geochemical anomalies have been found.
