AbstractThis report is the first detailed account of the occurrences, flow systems, and chemistry of groundwater in Canada. It relates the groundwater to the geological materials through which it flows and to the hydrologic cycle, and discusses comprehensively the principles and methods of hydrogeology and the methods, techniques, and formulae required for aquifer exploration and development.
Canada contains six major hydrogeological regions. Much groundwater data are available for the Interior Plains and St. Lawrence Lowlands hydrogeological regions, where groundwater is used extensively. Less data are available for the Appalachian, Canadian Shield, and Cordilleran hydrogeological regions, where surface waters are adequate to provide present demands. Little data are available for the northern region, where the population is sparsely distributed and permafrost influences the role of the groundwater.
